My girls read voraciously. We can't keep them supplied with enough books and the bookshelves in every room in the house are stacked two deep; that's lovely but I do sometimes feel as if the shelves are closing in on me! They always know who they want to be for the day, and this year we have a clear Harry Potter theme.

Luna Lovegood
I was left to make a cork necklace to ward off Nargles - which is the best excuse to buy a bottle of red I have ever had - and a pair of dirigible plum earrings.
These nearly ended me. The leaves fell off the first pair, so I remade them at 7.30 this morning and the second pair have deathcracks. Plus her ears are unpierced so they are threatening to fall off their elastic loops. I'll be stunned if they make it home intact!
Fleur Delacour
My beautiful tall ten year old was enchanted by the elegant Beauxbatons students both in book and the film of the Goblet of Fire, and pleaded for a long sleeved blue dress and a little cape. This is her last year at primary school, and possibly the last dressing up day she'll be doing; how could I say no? The costume was not too hard in principle, but I put the first sleeve in upside down, and then put the popper for the cape on the wrong side. Argh.
I am going in to school to work later. I shall be dressing as Professor Sprout. I may take a plant with me.
Such fabulous costumes--and especially exciting to see them made up after hearing about the plans on Saturday! Do we get to see Professor Sprout?!

ReplyDeleteI am so disappointed that my Smalls are not dressing up for WBD today. I also wish I was working today as I have the easiest costume to wear- all brown with a leaf on my head as Stick Man!!!

ReplyDeleteHow wonderful, and you are so right about the panic brought about thinking which character to choose , costume decision changed so many times in this house I could have done with a Hogwarts student to magic my mini minx into making her mind up, she finally flew to schools as a flower fairy - also a favourite of mine as a child. Loving the earrings, hope they were worth the late night?
ReplyDeleteThe earrings actually did survive the day! She said they were a bit awkward and kept falling off, but she really liked them,. Phew!
DeleteYou did good and have shamed me more than a little with your tenacity! My daughter has gone as Lola (Charlie and) - we already had the clothes, tied blue ribbons in her blonde hair, fashioned a glass of pink milk out of cardboard and she went to school clutching a stuffed Charlie! Easy peasy!

Fab! Our school only does WBD every other year (breathes a sigh of costuming relief).
ReplyDeleteTell your girls they look awesome. I'm sure Professor Sprout does too. My eldest went as Draco Malfoy about ten years ago (!), he was quite fair then and we slicked his hair back. He looked awesome too and won a prize -at the time everyone went as Harry so he really stood out.

ReplyDeleteLittle Son always went as Harry Potter - meant he could wear his specs all day!! Big Son didn't really enjoy it - Alex Rider was a favourite as it meant just own clothes!!
Sad now that they are too old for all this - however plans are afoot for something wacky for RND next week!

ReplyDeleteIt really was the option that required the least thought or effort - having hosted one Harry Potter party and been drafted in as an extra for another one, I can be a random Hogwarts teacher with about 5 minutes notice :-)

We are big fans of homemade costumes too, even though the last minute mind changing is stressful. 9 year old considered James Bond and Gollum but eventually went as Biggles thanks to a lucky find of a flying jacket at the jumble last year. Though I'm sure most of the children didn't know who he was!

To be encouraged to down tools and read for 15 mins per day was lovely and enabled me to start reading Great Expectations by Charles Dickens again. Lovely to read your blog again - i have been away from my little blog too long but I have been busy crafting. Jane x

ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous mum you are! Most children dressed up as either witches, footballers or fairies last year (easy on hand dress up!)...I was going for the little red riding hood look, but my little one was ill so I got away with it this year.

They look brilliant! They are super lucky to have you making them such great costumes, I agree though that it can feel a bit of a chore for the parents....actually it's more that (at our school at least) we have to provide costumes quite often for so many different things. Some Mums need to find a 'red velvet or red tweed' jacket for their kids in the form play next week!!....luckily my boy only needs black trousers and a jumper. Phew.
